In a Dec. 13 Point of View, DOT Secretary Tony Tata said that some 4,000-plus Hatteras Island residents “deserve” a $216 million bridge. That’s some $54,000 per resident to be paid from the general revenues. Of course, the bridge would be used by others (tourists, etc.) who would also benefit from the project.
Why not establish tolls to collect the cost of the construction and maintenance from the expected users, residents and tourists alike?
