Dennis Burns: Board extends voting times

December 21, 2013

The Wake County Board of Elections met Dec. 10 to establish early voting sites and hours for the 2014 May primary and general elections. The board heard from a score of citizens about voting access and Wake’s recent growth in election turnout.

After long deliberations, the board showed state leadership by providing extended weekday times (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and three weekend dates to address working people’s needs. By including one Sunday (1 to 5 p.m.) as in past elections, it also recognized the desires and concerns of a number of speakers. The schedules should help our increasing early voter turnout and help address delays and long lines on election day as the new VIVA rules are applied to Wake’s growing population.
