John L. Schmidt: Cincinnati, not Charlotte, is ‘Queen City’

December 27, 2013

Good luck to UNC and the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Belk Bowl. May the better team win.

UNC football coach Larry Fedora is all wrong, though. Charlotte is not the “Queen City.” Cincinnati is. No less an authority than Henry Wadsworth Longfellow anointed Cincinnati as the “Queen City of the West” way back in the 1840s.

Charlotte, on the other hand, is the “Queen’s City” (note the possessive), named after Princess Charlotte von Mecklenburg, the German-born wife of King George III.

I have been preaching this gospel to my North Carolina friends ever since I got here in 1967. Let’s set the record straight for once and all. Go Bearcats.
