Republic Wireless customers could face short-term disruptions

Republic Wireless has alerted its Triangle customers that they may temporarily experience dropped calls or inferior call quality when they use Sprint’s cellular network.

The possible disruptions are the result of Sprint upgrading its network in the Raleigh-Durham area to boost the speed of its cellular service. That work began last week and will be completed in early January, Republic reported in an alert sent to local customers.

“The end result of this upgrade process ... will be improved cellular call quality in the area,” Noreen Allen, chief marketing officer of Raleigh-based Republic, said in a e-mail.

Republic offers an innovative hybrid service that uses Wi-Fi as its primary network and cellular service provided by Sprint as a backup. Calls using Wi-Fi will be unaffected by the Sprint upgrade.

In November Republic rolled out a smorgasbord of new monthly plans and a new smartphone for its service — both of which were well-received by reviewers.

The new plans range from as low as $5 a month to as high as $40 a month for unlimited voice, text and data when you buy Motorola’s Moto X smartphone for $299. The new service also was upgraded to provide seamless transitions from Wi-Fi to cellular service.
