Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Martin scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Xavier Musketeers defeated the St. John's Red Storm, 70-60, in Big East Conference opener for both schools.
Isaiah Philmore added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Semaj Christon scored 10 and dished out eight assists for Xavier (11-3, 1-0 Big East) in the team's first Big East game since joining the conference. The Musketeers have now won six straight.
D'Angelo Harrison scored a game-high 21 points for the Red Storm (9-4, 0-1) on 7-of-20 shooting, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Rysheed Jordan added 17 points and six rebounds for the Red Storm, while JaKarr Sampson accounted for 10 points and eight rebounds as the team had a three-game win streak halted.
Xavier shot 44.6 percent from the field, including 56.5 percent in the second half. Martin led a 13-point run in the second half, scoring nine of his 15 points during the swing.
The Musketeers held St. John's to 25 percent shooting in the second half and to 30.9 percent from the floor in the game. Xavier outrebounded the Red Storm, 45-38.
Matt Stainbrook nearly secured a double-double for the Musketeers, scoring nine and grabbing 10 rebounds.
