Downtown Raleigh galleries and shops kick off the new year in festive style with the first First Friday of 2014. Heres the skinny on some of the most fashionable happenings:
• High Cotton celebrates its first annual Collegiate Design Competition with a party to announce the winner. Open to students in the N.C. State College of Design and College of Textiles, the competition challenged students to design a paisley pattern using a specific palette of colors. The party starts at 6 p.m. and shoppers will have a chance to vote for the eight finalists in the store until 10 p.m., when votes will be tallied and the winner announced. • Raleigh Denims Curatory will feature two photography shows for First Friday. Customers can view photos documenting the Carolina Ballet by Tim Lytvinenko (brother of Raleigh co-founder Victor Lytvinenko), as well as images by the Film 9 collective. Planning season for summer weddings is in full swing, and brides-to-be can see scores of local vendors in one place during The Wedding Show, Saturday and Sunday in the Jim Graham Building at the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. The event will feature local and regional wedding vendors such as Iced Cupcakes, Carolina Bridal World, Rocky Top Hospitality Catering and Greg Warren Flowers, among others. Attendees can sample catered food and cakes, watch bridalwear fashion shows and register to win prizes. Show hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
