Theater Picks

The best theater picks, Jan. 3

CorrespondentJanuary 2, 2014

South Stream Productions, a theater company formed last year that established its credentials with a well-received first show, now tackles Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Seascape,” beginning Friday at Durham’s Common Ground Theatre. The play looks at an older couple as they reflect on their lives while at the beach – the husband wanting to settle into retirement, the wife wanting new experiences. That happens when two large lizards emerge from the ocean. At first the human couple is afraid of the lizard couple, but soon they are comparing their ways of life with each other, from sex to long-term commitments. Absurdist on the surface, the play offers much astute commentary about relationships and how they change. 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 3 p.m. Sunday (through Jan. 19). $12-$16.
