— Police on Friday charged a Youngsville man with stealing more than 40 storm grates from locations in Wake Forest and Youngsville.

Michael Ray Markham, 45, of North Raleigh Farms Road in Youngsville has been charged with four counts of felony larceny and one count of misdemeanor larceny, according to arrest warrants filed Friday at the Wake County Magistrate’s Office by the Wake Forest and Rolesville police departments.

Police last month recovered 98 storm drain grates that had been stolen from neighborhoods in Wake Forest, Rolesville and Raleigh.

Markham is accused of swiping 41 of the heavy iron covers, which measure 2 feet by 3 feet and weigh more than 100 pounds each, between Dec. 6 and Dec. 17. The stolen items had a total cash value of $10,400, court records show.

Prior to Markham’s arrest, Wake Forest officials said the grates are worth about $15 to $20 each when sold as scrap metal, but replacing them would have cost hundreds of dollars each.
