2013 N&O Travel Photo Contest winners

January 4, 2014

Congratulations to winners of the 2013 News & Observer Travel Photo Contest.

The winning photos – which we present today – will take you on an vicarious voyage across North Carolina and around the world. The majority of winners’ photos came from our state, with a few exceptions shot in Alaska and Hanoi.

In all, 264 photos were entered this year. The shot judged Best Overall was “Golden Hour,” a striking silhouette of a fisherman and birds shot in Morehead City’s Bogue Sound last month by Steve Browne of Cary.

The Readers’ Choice Award goes to John Buie of Apex, who captured the sunrise at Nags Head Fishing Pier.

This year, we introduced a new category, Smartphones, for images snapped with creative apps and filters. The range of smartphone photos was impressive, and one winner surprised judges with an exquisite photo of a gator taken with his phone.
