Kim Porter: The voiceless

January 4, 2014

Gene Nichol masterfully exposed the current elected leadership in North Carolina concerning the poor in his Dec. 29 piece “From silence to savagery, pain for poor intensifies.” No state has taken so many steps backward and punished the poor as ours has. Why do we continue to cater to those who fail to see that they should represent all the people in their districts? Why do our elected officials get so bent out of shape about issues such as sexual orientation, abortion and spending, then fail to support programs that address homeless children or those in poverty? Is it because children cannot vote?
