Cary Academy students make honor band

Nineteen Cary Academy students were selected for the 2013 N.C. Association of Independent Schools Honor Band.

The band gives students the opportunity to perform as part of a large ensemble made up of the top concert band musicians at NCAIS schools. The high school band clinician was Dr. John LaCognata, director of bands at UNC-Wilmington. The clinician for the middle school band was Charlie Burts, director of bands at Sidney Lanier Middle School in Fairfax, Va.

The students selected from Cary Academy were seniors Emma Astrike-Davis on flute, Andy Cooper and Elizabeth Hunt on clarinet, and Daniel Sheitman on trombone; juniors Kendall Bell on trombone, Ben Davalos-Martinez on trumpet and Richard Van Vliet on alto sax; freshmen Esra Balkas on flute, Damon Blair on tenor sax, Jae Muth on clarinet and Caleb Norfleet and Patrick Schaefer on trombone; eighth-graders Samuel Chow and Shaan Dhawan on flute, Ben Lipson on trumpet and Will Snider on percussion; seventh-graders Amy Chang on clarinet and Caroline Spancake on flute; and sixth-grader Christianna Swift on flute.
