High school basketball roundup: Clark scores 40 for Clayton in close win

Clayton’s Gary Clark scored 40 to lead the Comets (11-3), No. 7 in the N&O, to a 69-62 win over East Wake. Nahjuwan Potts had 25 in the loss.

Apex's Wells rips Cary: T.J. Wells had 27 points, five assists and nine steals in leading Apex (7-6, 4-0, No. 14 in the The News & Observer rankings) to a 76-55 Southwest Wake Athletic 4A Conference win against Cary on Tuesday.

“T.J. Wells was phenomenal,” Cary coach Allan Gustafson said. “Phenomenal. P.H.E.N.O.M.E.N.A.L. I thought he dominated the game both offensively and defensively.”

The victory was Apex’s seventh in a row. T.J. Evans added 16 points.

“(Wells) was just incredible out on the perimeter, making deflections and getting steals,” Apex coach David Neal said. “Offensively, he was as good as I’ve ever seen him. He’s knocking down 3s, and they can’t stay in front of him (so) he’s penetrating and setting up his teammates. He was spectacular on both ends of the floor.”

Knights handle Rockets: Top-ranked Northern Durham raced past No. 15 Person 83-48 in a Piedmont Athletic 4A game. The Knights, led by Ricky Council’s 23 points, took control early and never allowed Person (9-5) to make a serious run. Kentrell Barkley added 16 for the Knights.

Millbrook runs: No. 3 Millbrook came out running and never slowed down as it blazed past Wakefield 83-44 in a Cap Eight 4A game. Millbrook (11-3, 4-0) took control in the opening period.

Wake Forest pulls upset: Wake Forest pulled the biggest upset of the night as it defeated No. 5 Heritage (11-2) in a Cap Eight 4A game, 65-54. Wake Forest is 4-6, 1-2.

Jordan surprises Hornets: No. 10 Durham Jordan (9-3) easily handled Durham Hillside 89-73 in a Piedmont Athetic 4A game. Josh Thompson scored 25 and Tyreck Frye added 21 for the Falcons. Justice Kithcart had 18 for the No. 12 Hornets (6-3).

Bunn stops Raiders: Bunn held Southern Vance to two points in the third period to break open a Northern Carolina 2A game and take a 59-36 win. Deshawn High, who averages 24.7 points, had 17 for the No. 11 Wildcats, which won their 10th straight game.

Knights pound Garner: No. 13 Knightdale flexed its Greater Neuse 4A muscles in a 72-41 league win over Garner.

Hawks impress: Holly Springs moved to 4-0 in the Southwest Wake Athletic 4A Conference with a 67-51 win over Middle Creek. The Hawks opened the season 0-7.

Free throws help Falcons: Green Hope guard Ridge Ford scored 13, including five free throws in the final minute, to lead the Falcons (5-10, 1-2 Southwest Wake) to a 43-37 win over Athens Drive (1-13, 0-3).

Parrott holds on: Raleigh Grace Christian missed a shot at the buzzer in a 63-62 loss to Kinston Parrott. Joshua Geen had 22 points in the loss.

Duo paces RCA: D.J. Myers scored 33 and Robert Mbenoun scored 28 in Raleigh Christian’s 86-56 win over Wilson Christian.

Girls

Apex tops Cary: Apex couldn’t stop Cary’s Azura Stevens, but stopped the rest of the Imps in a 68-62 Southwest Wake Athletic victory. Stevens, a Duke recruit, had 34 points and 15 rebounds for the Imps.

Apex (11-2, 3-1, No. 4) got 18 points and six rebounds from Mia Castagnero, who also shadowed Stevens, often with the help of teammate Emily Sasser, on defense.

Meredith Courtney added 15 for Cary (10-3, 2-2), which closed to within four points in the final minute.

Chapel Hill dominates: Top-ranked and undefeated Chapel Hill built a 33-point lead in the first half of a 70-21 Big Eight 3A victory over Cedar Ridge. Jamella Smith scored 17 in the win.

Broughton steady: Broughton scored 19 or more in each quarter as it defeated Sanderson 82-50 in a Cap Eight game. Kaila Ealey, who averages 21.4 points, scored 23 for the No. 3 Caps (10-2, 4-0). Dreamer Crawford had 17 points and Mariah Wall scored 16. Bria Gibson had 21 for the Spartans.

Crutchfield leads Wildcats: Kai Crutchfield scored 18 as No. 6 Millbrook (11-3, 3-1 Cap Eight) topped Wakefield 52-28.

Gibbons rolls: No. 11 Cardinal Gibbons (10-3, 3-0 Big Eight 3A) rolled past Northern Vance 72-32. Senior Morgan Reid had 22 points and sophomore Oliva Smith had 18 points and 15 rebounds.

Ravens top D.A.: No. 13 Durham Academy (12-4) fell to Ravenscroft 55-37 in a Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference game. The Ravens (1-0, 9-4) led 23-8 in the first period.

Banks gets 23: Cary Academy’s Rebekah Banks, who averages 22.3 points, scored 23 in the Chargers’ 56-51 win over North Raleigh Christian. Lauren Callihan added 16.
