Sara Atkins Mann: JV role models

January 8, 2014

Since he learned how to read, our 9-year-old son has pored over the Sports section every morning while eating his breakfast. As a huge sports and numbers fan, he can rattle off statistics of his favorite players in almost every sport. His eyes have grown wide when he has read of the astronomical contracts awarded to the professional stars, and, like most of his friends, he dreams of the same type of glory and fame.

How refreshing it was, therefore, to see your three-part series “Carolina Dreamers” on the JV basketball team at UNC.

Thank you for giving him such an impressive example of what we parents deem to be so valuable about sports: dedication, a strong work ethic and a genuine love of the game. We know that it’s highly unlikely that his dreams of being a professional athlete will come true, but if he can develop those same qualities that Hubert Davis and his JV players demonstrate, he will have achieved great success.
