NCCU names new chief academic officer

— N.C. Central University announced Wednesday that it had appointed Johnson O. Akinleye as its next provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs following a national search.

Akinleye has worked in higher education for 25 years, most recently as associate vice chancellor for academic programs at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington for six years. He also has worked at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Fla., Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Bowie State University in Bowie, Md.

Akinleye became NCCU’s chief academic officer on Jan. 1. The university said he will work to promote “multi-dimensional educational experiences” and lead faculty development and academic planning as he oversees NCCU’s seven schools and colleges, among other duties.
