A new deli with a long history is coming to Raleigh.
Grouchos Deli, a sandwich chain that got its start in 1941, is opening near the N.C. State University campus in March.
The restaurants specialties, which havent changed since 1967, include sandwiches such as the STP Dipper with roast beef, turkey, Swiss cheese and bacon and the Brown Moose with has roast beef and provolone cheese.
Its really the same menu thats been pretty much intact since the late 60s, said Grouchos franchisor Bruce Miller, whose grandfather Harold Miller started the business in Columbia, S.C.
Subs and salads can be served with Grouchos famous Formula 45 sauce, a Russian and Thousand Island dressing concoction that Harold Miller developed while living in an orphanage as a child, Bruce Miller said.
The place will serve beer and wine, something that will make it stand out from most other Grouchos, which dont typically serve alcohol.
Co-owner Walker Garrison said hes still working out the details of the restaurants beverage offerings, but hopes to pair up with local breweries.
The 1,900-square-foot full-service restaurant is the first in the Triangle and will have flat-screen televisions and room for about 65. The place will also offer to-go services and catering.
And if all goes well, Garrison hopes to soon open more Grouchos restaurants in the area.
Wed like to open one every year and a half or two years, Garrison said. Faster, if possible.
Grouchos will be at 10 Horne St., in the old U.S. Post Office building, behind Jasmin Mediterranean Bistro.
Amras, a Glenwood South private club that closed temporarily in November, is expected to reopen this month.
According to co-owner Alex Amra, the place that offers cocktails, beer and cigars is going through changes that include new decorations and bar top, fresh paint and a redone patio.
Amras is at 106 Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh.
Toppers Pizza, a Wisconsin-based pizza chain, has opened in Chapel Hill.
The restaurant features unique pizzas such as the Mac N Cheese with cheese sauce, macaroni noodles and mozzarella and cheddar cheeses and the Loaded Tot-zza with ranch dressing, tater tots, bacon, green onions and mozzarella and nacho cheeses.
Customers also have the option of building their own pie.
The 1,600-square-foot restaurant offers takeout and delivery services, but has a lobby with a leather couch and chair, where customers can wait for their food or stay and eat.
The lobby is comfortable, owner Wayne Byers said. There is music playing and TVs.
Byers plans to eventually add seating to the restaurants 125-square-foot outdoor patio.
The restaurant, the third Toppers in North Carolina, is holding a grand opening Saturday at 10 a.m., and the first 50 customers will get food vouchers that can be redeemed for one predetermined menu item each week for 52 weeks.
Toppers Pizza is at 306 W. Franklin St., next to Jimmy Johns.
Electronics retailer Best Buy in North Raleigh is moving down the street.
The store at 6101 Capital Blvd. is set to close Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. and the new place will open Jan. 24 at 5220 Capital Blvd., near Michaels and Sweet Tomatoes.
According to Best Buy spokesman Jeff Shelman, the lease is expiring at the original location and the company opted not to renew it.
The new store will be about 35,000 square feet and will be the first North Carolina location designed with Best Buys new efficient floor plan.
Its more open and it has a bigger area for dot-com pick ups and a bigger Geek Squad area, Shelman said. Its a better layout and more customer friendly.
Restaurant Zydeco has closed at 208 Wolfe St. in Raleighs City Market. Owner Antwan Harris said he hopes to find a new location.
Yoga studio Bikram Yoga Chapel Hill is opening in April at the Greenbridge Condominiums, which is at the corner of Rosemary and North Graham Streets in Chapel Hill ... Wendys has opened at 4510 Fayetteville Road in Raleigh. The restaurant down the road at 8400 Olympia Drive has closed ... First Watch, a breakfast, brunch and lunch chain, has signed a multifranchise deal and plans to open five Triangle restaurants in the next four years. The first is expected to open in Raleigh by the end of 2014.
