— The death of the 9-year-old boy, who was shot in the head last Saturday night along with his mother while they were in a car on Lucas Drive, is the first homicide of 2014.

Jaedan Sharpe died Thursday at the hospital where he had been since the Saturday evening shooting, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said Friday.

His mother, Lakeisha Holloway, 31, remained hospitalized with serious wounds.

Despite her wounds, she was able to drive herself and her son to a house a few blocks away to get help, police said.

“The staff and students at W.G. Pearson Elementary School are very saddened by the loss of Jaedan Sharpe,” principal LaManda Pryor said in a statement issued Friday. “He was a popular and well-liked third-grader throughout our school community. … Jaedan’s family is in our thoughts and prayers.”

Police have made no arrests in the case and asked again for the public’s help in gathering information.

Neighbors of the mother and child declined to comment, saying they feared retaliation.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call investigators at 919-560-4440, ext. 29325, or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.

Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers do not have to identify themselves.
