Matchup to Watch

Al Jefferson vs. Joakim Noah: Jefferson is one of the NBA’s most gifted low-post scorers. Noah is among the league’s best defensive centers. Something’s got to give.

Observations

• The Bulls saved themselves about $15 million in salary and luxury tax by dealing small forward Luol Deng to the Cleveland Cavaliers in order to acquire and waive center Andrew Bynum. The Bulls didn’t feel they could re-sign Deng at a price that was right for both parties, so they cut their losses in the aftermath of again losing point guard Derrick Rose to a season-ending injury.

• The question going forward is whether the Bulls will continue to clean house among the veterans. Point guard Kirk Hinrich and small forward Mike Dunleavy both have trade value to teams trying to cement their playoff status. There’s also been speculation the Bulls could waive Carlos Boozer under the amnesty provision.

Tap-ins

• Former Bobcats point guard D.J. Augustin was signed by the Bulls after the Toronto Raptors cut him to facilitate the Rudy Gay trade. Augustin, on his third team since leaving the Bobcats, had nine assists against the Phoenix Suns.

• The Bobcats lost earlier this season in Chicago 86-81, in a game even closer than that score conveys.

Did you know?

Indicative of their injury troubles, the Bulls have started 14 different lineups this season.
