Greg Bruhn: No picnic

January 10, 2014

I take issue with the Jan. 6 letter “Parasitic protesters.” The writer fails to mention several important facts about the payment of unemployment benefits. People receiving those benefits must have been employed for an extended time and also must have lost their position due to no fault of their own.

One of the characteristics of this period of unemployment is the large number who were gainfully employed for many years or decades in the same position and were terminated. The numbers of the long-term unemployed are at historically high levels. There are simply not enough positions available for applicants. The majority of unemployed individuals would prefer to be gainfully employed. Anyone who thinks unemployment is a desirable lifestyle needs to experience it firsthand.
