Jean Blackwell: Aim high, teachers

January 11, 2014

Jim Hunt’s call to action in his Jan. 5 Point of View piece on raising teacher pay to the national average made me long for the days when the leaders of our state did more than pay lip service to funding public education.

The erosion of legislative support for adequate teacher salaries is sending our schools to the bottom of state rankings and threatens to result in bottom-of-the-barrel preparation of our students.

This North Carolinian absolutely agrees with former Gov. Hunt that teachers should be paid at the national average. And I dream of a day when the state’s leaders show the will to aim even higher for the sake of our teachers, our children and our state.
