Regarding the Jan. 5 Point of View piece “Finding the will to raise N.C. teacher pay”: For Jim Hunt, teachers’ pay is the only subject. How about benefits and early retirement? Do they contribute to health care and retirement? Can they accumulate and use vacation time? Why is the summer their vacation?
Let them give up some of the benefits for higher pay. Put them on Social Security and a 401(k) plan like the rest of the workforce. They can retire at 30 years of service and 52 years of age while private industry works until 66. Is that fair? When they agree to work like everyone else, then I will listen a little more.
Private industry no longer has pensions, only unions. Time to level the playing field or they will all end up like Rhode Island and Detroit. And the product teachers are putting out is recalled more than the Yugo.
