SYRACUSE, N.Y. — North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams said Saturday after UNCs loss at Syracuse that it was not my place to meet with Mary Willingham, a former UNC learning specialist who claims that one of Williams former players could not read or write.
Willinghams assertion first reported in a story by CNN angered Williams, who spoke out against it on Wednesday following his teams loss against Miami.
I dont believe thats true, Williams said then. Its totally unfair. Im really proud of the kids weve brought in here. Im really proud of what our student-athletes have done. Thats not fair. Ive been here 10 recruiting classes, I guess. We havent brought anybody in like that.
Willingham, who works at UNC but no longer with athletes, stood by her comments Friday during an interview with The News & Observer, and she said that if Williams didnt believe her she would show him proof that one of his players was illiterate.
We have great leaders at the university, and if they want me to do something theyll tell me, Williams said.
