Former Enloe football coach Mike Massey’s statement on his resignation

January 16, 2014

Mike Massey, who resigned as Enloe High’s head football coach on Wednesday, issued the following statement:

These past two years have been extremely fulfilling as the head football coach at Enloe High School. I was hired in 2012 to lead a program of eager, enthusiastic and talented student-athletes who wanted to succeed on the football field as well as in the classroom. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with high character and high quality players who are very coachable and who demonstrate the willingness to learn what it takes to be successful. I have had the honor of fostering a relationship on and off the field with our players and I hope they have learned as much from me as I have from them.

The future is tremendously promising for our football team. We have met several rising grade students attending our open houses who are anxious to play high school football and we know will develop into great football players. We have 25 returning letterman who are working hard in the weight room and in the classroom preparing for next season. We have increased interest from athletes in other sports programs who want to join our team. The program is primed for change. With that being said, it is time for someone new to come and put their imprint on Enloe Football and move the program forward. I have tendered my resignation as head football coach at Enloe High School effective immediately.

I am confident that Mr. Lyons and his administrative team will recruit a high quality coach whom they can trust and who they will support as he guides the program moving forward. The relationship between the head coach and administration is paramount. Without total commitment and support from the administration, the booster club, coaches, players, and parents, the process of improvement fails. I will continue to work collaboratively through this transition.

Until a new head coach is appointed, I will continue to supervise the after-school weight training and speed development of football players. I will continue to work with parents and teachers to monitor the academic performance of the players in the program to ensure they progress towards graduation and that they are prepared to play next season.

I have the utmost confidence in this football team and I know that they have the work ethic, experience, desire, passion and drive to be successful in a highly competitive CAP-8 conference. I am proud of my time serving as the head football coach at Enloe High School.

Sincerely,

Mike Massey
