Craig DeShong: Bounced out

January 16, 2014

Regarding the Jan. 9 front-page story “UNC system still battling athletes’ academic gap”: I’m sure this article brought solace to all those college hopefuls who were on the waiting list for admission to UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State, East Carolina, etc., in knowing that their hope of a college education was denied because their seat in the freshman class is occupied by a student who can barely read, didn’t have college board scores even close to the school’s minimum requirement and has no plan or chance of graduating. Indeed, the only merit of that student is an ability to catch a football or bounce a basketball.
