Raleigh police charge driver in fatal hit-and-run crash

From staff reportsJanuary 17, 2014

— A 16-year-old girl died Thursday night after she was struck by two vehicles on New Hope Road in East Raleigh, and one of the drivers has been charged with felony hit-and-run.

William Creamont Beary was driving a Dodge minivan when he hit Justice Yasmeen Smith as she was crossing New Hope Road, near the intersection of Water Oak Drive, just before 9:45 p.m., according to police.

The impact of the collision knocked Justice to the ground where she was struck again by a 2000 Buick. The driver of the car stopped, but police say Beary, 36, did not. He was arrested at his home on Babbling Brook Drive Friday morning.

Justice, who lived on nearby Courtney Lane, was taken to WakeMed, where she later died, according to a Raleigh police accident report.

Smith attended Wake Forest High School and was in the 11th grade, said Wake County public schools spokeswoman Renee McCoy.
