Duke Energy warns customers of possible fraud

Duke Energy has alerted hundreds of customers in the Carolinas that their payment information might have been fraudulently used by a former contract employee.

Duke Energy Progress reported the incident Friday to South Carolina’s utility commission. The utility said Gwinnett County, Ga., police reported that several credit card and checking account numbers of Duke customers had been found in a suspect’s car.

The suspect, who Duke did not identify, had worked in a call center for several months in 2013. Duke said a records research found the suspect had handled accounts whose numbers were found in the car.

Duke said it mailed notices to 42 customers in South Carolina offering to pay for credit-repair services if needed and credit monitoring. Another 500 N.C. customers were alerted their information had been obtained and might have been fraudulently used.
