Area fishing report

Oregon Inlet

Snow on Wednesday brought fishing to a halt. However, on Tuesday there was a blue fin sighting. Oregon Inlet Fishing Center 252-441-6301,


Up until Wednesday’s snowfall, it’s been reported that puppy drum and sea mullets have been biting between Kate Point and Ramp 43. Fresh shrimp has been the bait of choice. Red Drum Tackle 252-995-5414,; offshore news, Oden’s Dock 252-986-2555,; or


Cold winter weather has put a freeze on most fishing, but there have been reports of trout biting on the creeks. Contact: Tradewinds Bait & Tackle 252-928-5491,; Morris Marina 252-225-4261,

Cape Lookout/Bogue Inlet

Anglers are anxiously awaiting the start of blue fin season, but so far it has been quiet. Contact: EJW Outdoors 252-247-4725; Portside Marina 252-726-7678;

Topsail Island

Speckled trout and red drum are being caught in the creeks. Artificial bait, espcially Voodoo shrimp, has been a popular selection. There was also black drum sighted off the south end of the inlet last weekend. Contact: East Coast Discount Tackle 910-328-1887,

Wilmington/ Wrightsville Beach

Trout and red drum have been nipping in the surf and inshore creeks. Anglers have had success with soft, plastic bait. Contact: Tex’s Tackle 910-791-1763,


Jordan Lake

Near-freezing temperatures have discouraged area fishing. Water level: normal 216, Wednesday 216.58, full pool 240. Contact: Wilsonville General Store 919-362-7101; Crosswinds Marina 919-362-5391.

Kerr Lake

Sub-30-degree weather over the past week has hampered anglers. Previously, there have been striped bass sightings. Water level: normal 300, Wednesday 301.16, full pool 320. Contact: Bobcat’s Bait & Tackle 434-374-8381;

Lake Wheeler

Cold winter weather has slowed area anglers. Contact: Wilsonville General Store 919-362-7101.

Shearon Harris Lake

Crappie are biting at depths of 18-22 feet off secondary point or deep in the creek channels. Soft, plastic bait has been successful. Contact: The Tackle Box 919-557-8255;
