Frigid wind to close NC Zoo again on Friday

From staff reportsJanuary 23, 2014

— For the second time this week, cold weather will force the N.C. Zoo to remain closed Friday.

State officials are expecting “extremely cold and windy conditions,” and they’ll bring most of the zoo’s outdoor African mammals into special holding facilities.

The National Weather Service expects a high near 27 in Asheboro on Friday, with a wind chill down to zero or below. The service has issued a wind-chill advisory for central North Carolina through 9 a.m. Friday.

The zoo was closed Wednesday, too, because of frigid temperatures and icy accumulation left by a winter storm that moved across the state overnight Tuesday.

State officials expect to open the park to the public this weekend for its usual winter hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Day-to-day information is available at 800-488-0444 or nczoo.org.
