Man, 22, charged in death of Durham woman, 83, in I-40 collision

From Staff ReportsJanuary 26, 2014

— Raleigh police announced an arrest late Sunday in the catastrophic traffic accident that killed a Durham woman.

Raleigh crash reconstruction unit officers charged Brandon Lewis Jefferson, 22, with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle in connection with the death of Catherine Obie, 83, of Durham. “Jefferson is in custody and will be processed at the Wake County Detention Center,” Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said in a statement.

Obie’s car was hit by a vehicle that crossed from the eastbound to the westbound lanes of I-40 on Sunday afternoon and collided with traffic there, killing the woman, police said earlier.

The collision involved several other vehicles and created a major tie-up Sunday.

The crash was reported at 4:46 p.m. Sunday and closed westbound I-40 between Lake Wheeler Road and Gorman Street.

At about 9:30 p.m. Raleigh Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said that the multiple lanes that had been closed for hours since the crash were being reopened.

Earlier, drivers had been advised to avoid the area, as all westbound lanes were closed. An investigation into the crash is continuing, Sughrue said.
