Reigning Olympic gold medalist to have wrist surgery

The Sports NetworkJanuary 28, 2014

Maelle Ricker, the reigning Olympic gold medal winner in women's snowboard cross, suffered a wrist injury Tuesday and will have surgery in the near future.

Ricker, a three-time Olympian, did not rule out potentially competing in the snowboard cross at the upcoming Sochi Games, with the event scheduled for Feb. 16.

"While the timing of this injury is very unfortunate, we know that Maelle is an incredibly resilient athlete that has battled back from several injuries over her career to accomplish great things for Canada," executive director of Canada Snowboard Steven Hills said in a statement.

"We hope that Maelle's surgery is successful and believe that she will have every opportunity to join Team Canada in Sochi with the goal of competing in the Snowboard Cross event on February 16."
