Toy maker wins Super Bowl commercial

The owners of Durham-based Barley Labs learned Thursday night that they didn’t win a Super Bowl commercial, but the couple aren’t walking away from the contest empty-handed.

Scott Beaudry and Theresa Chu, co-owners of the small business that makes all-natural dog treats out of recycled barley from Fullsteam Brewery, learned that the grand prize and commercial would go to GoldieBlox, an Oakland, Calif., company that makes construction toys for girls.

Barley Labs, GoldieBlox and two other companies beat out thousands of nonprofit organizations and small businesses across the nation to reach the final four in Intuit’s Small Business Big Game contest.

Barley Labs and the two other finalists will still get a commercial made by an elite advertising agency and airtime on national television. The other finalists included Dairy Poop, a Nampa, Idaho, business that sells natural dairy compost, and Locally Laid Egg Co., a Duluth, Minn., company centered on pasture-raised eggs.
