Wake County school system changes makeup days

The Wake County school system is canceling Saturday’s makeup day for year-round students while also extending the school year for traditional-calendar students.

School officials say year-round students won’t be in class tomorrow “due to continuing hazardous driving conditions remaining at several of our year-round schools, and in accordance with the National Weather Service forecast for tonight.” The district had originally scheduled Feb. 1 to make up Tuesday’s snow day.

Instead, year-round students will make up Tuesday’s snow day on Feb. 8. Wake is also rescheduling the May 31 makeup day to Feb. 15. The other two Saturday makeup days are April 26 and May 3.

Students at traditional-calendar schools will make up Friday’s snow day on June 11 – extending the end of the school year by a day. School officials are deviating from the adopted schedule which would have had students make up the day on March 31 – a Monday that’s the second day of spring break.

Under Wake’s original makeup day schedule, they would have used March 31, April 1 and April 2 before hitting June 11.

Traditional-calendar students will make up the other three snow days from this week on Feb. 17, March 28 and April 21.

Students at the modified-calendar schools will make up Friday on April 21. They’re already going to school on Feb. 17, March 10 and March 11.

Students at the early colleges and single-sex leadership academies will make up Friday on April 21. They have makeup days on Feb. 17, May 29 and May 30.
