Cecil Banks: Poverty’s true toll

February 1, 2014

Gene Nichol’s Jan. 26 Point of View “Everything but” clearly presents the real challenge facing our public schools as well as our American society in general. Unfortunately, the political leaders of North Carolina prefer to bury their heads in the sands of “merit” pay for teachers and so called “tax reform” plans that serve only to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. We will lose the education and economic competition with other nations as long as we fail to recognize the true toll poverty is taking on our citizenry.
