San Luis Obispo, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Luke Nelson netted 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists as the UC Irvine Anteaters easily handled the Cal Poly Mustangs, 64-50, in a Big West Conference showdown at Mott Athletics Center.
Alex Young chipped in 14 points with five assists and Mike Best scored 10 for UC Irvine (14-9, 5-2 Big West). The Anteaters ended a two-game losing skid with the victory.
Chris Eversley notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Cal Poly (8-13, 4-4). Kyle Odister tallied 12 points on 4-of-15 shooting in his first game back from injury. The Mustangs have lost three consecutive matchups.
UC Irvine shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the first half, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range, and exploded out to a 39-28 lead when the teams headed for the locker rooms at the break. Cal Poly shot 36.7 percent from the field in the frame.
The Anteaters cooled off to 40 percent shooting in the second period, including 1-of-7 from distance. The night got worse for Cal Poly, as the Mustangs hit just 23.1 percent of their field goal attempts in the second half.
UC Irvine held the advantage in points in the paint, 28-8, and in rebounding, 39-34. Cal Poly had the edge in points off turnovers, 14-8.
