The Wake County Public School System has shown the downside to having a large school district.
It canceled school Jan. 28, and there wasn’t a flake of snow in the Raleigh area until about 5 p.m. It canceled school Jan. 31 while some private schools held classes Jan. 30! The high Jan. 31 was forecast to be 50.
I’m sure the school administration had reasons that not every bus for every school in the entire county could go on every road. However, the vast majority of roads in the Raleigh metro area were passable if not completely ice-free.
Perhaps WCPSS should be broken into more manageable pieces, as the smaller private schools seemed to figure out how to educate their students. While the private school kids were being educated by teachers, most public school kids with working parents were being taught by Hollywood actors (TV). Which kids are better off?
Our public schools can do better than this. For our kids’ sake, they must.
