Area players expected to sign national letters on Wednesday

Editor's note: This story incorrectly reported the name of the Cardinal Gibbons senior quarterback as Shaw Stankavage. His first name is Shawn.

High school senior athletes may sign National Letters of Intent during a spring period that begins Wednesday.

National letters obligate the athlete and the school to each other in exchange for the promise of some athletic scholarship assistance. Neither is obligated to the other until the athlete signs.

Athletes may sign national letters in football, track and field, cross country and soccer this week. Other sports have separate signing periods.

The vast majority of athletes, except for football and basketball, who sign national letters do not receive full scholarships, but instead receive some financial assistance.

Some schools, including schools in the Ivy League, do not give athletic scholarships, but do give financial aid to students. Service academies are included in the list of area players if athletic participation is a factor in the student’s appointment to school. Campbell University does not give football scholarships.
