Vina del Mar, Chile (SportsNetwork.com) - Former top-10 star Tommy Robredo went by way of a second-round upset Wednesday at the Chile Open tennis tournament.

Argentine Leonardo Mayer upended the second-seeded Spaniard 3-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 on the red clay at Club Naval. The world No. 16 Robredo captured this event in Santiago three years ago.

Meanwhile, defending champion Horacio Zeballos began his title defense with a 6-3, 6-3 first-round victory over Chilean wild card Gonzalo Lama. The Argentine stunned Rafael Nadal in last year's Vina del Mar finale to capture his lone career ATP title.

The final first-round match saw fifth-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy beat Chilean wild card Christian Garin 7-5, 6-0.

Also in the second round, Colombian Santiago Giraldo ousted fourth-seeded Spaniard Marcel Granollers 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-2) and seventh-seeded Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez avoided an upset by overcoming Italian Paolo Lorenzi, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Giraldo was a runner-up at this event in Santiago three years ago.
