Russ Ferguson: Barnes should’ve stayed in race

February 5, 2014

As a Republican, I couldn’t be happier that Clay Aiken is running for Congress because he will most likely lose (Feb. 5 news story). In North Carolina, we don’t elect our representatives because they came in second in “American Idol.” We are better than that.

However, I am disappointed to see people like Houston Barnes – honest people who have built a successful business while raising a thriving family – leave the race. These are the people our forefathers intended would compete to represent us in the House of Representatives, and our country would be better off with people like Barnes standing up for us.
