John Heuer: Seeger a peace advocate

February 7, 2014

On Jan. 23, I called Pete Seeger, hoping to meet with him to talk about forming a Veterans for Peace Chorus at our 2014 national VFP convention in Asheville this July. Pete was a longtime member of Veterans for Peace. I didn’t get an answer on Pete’s phone but still drove from Raleigh up to Beacon, N.Y., where Pete lived. I didn’t get to see Pete, who died Jan. 27, but I will be forever grateful for the sound of his voice and his twinkling smile.

In 2007, I asked Pete for help writing a song. Here is the lyric he offered: “No more war, that’s the key!”
