GAME NOTES: The Cal State Northridge Matadors have lost two in a row and six of their last seven, and will look to try and turn things around as they host the Cal State Fullerton Titans in a Big West Conference clash at the Matadome.
Like Cal State Northridge, Cal State Fullerton has lost its last two games played - both in Big West competition - and has dropped five of its past six games overall. The Titans lost to UC Riverside, 72-69, Thursday night.
Northridge was downed UC Davis, 90-86, in overtime in Davis. The loss dropped the Matadors back to 3-6 in conference play, which is three and a half games back of UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara for the Big West lead.
Cal State Fullerton leads the all-time series between the two programs, 38-30. The two squads will clash again later this season in Big West play on Feb. 27.
Fullerton allowed UC Riverside to connect on 51.8 percent of its shot attempts in the game, which helped Riverside escape with the three-point win. Both Alex Harris and Michael Williams scored 20 points to lead the Titans in the loss as the only players to net double-digit scoring totals. Harris connected on 4- of-6 shooting from 3-point distance, and 6-of-10 from the free-throw line. The Titans hit 44.2 percent of their shots from the floor.
Similar to their performance against UC Riverside, Williams and Harris are the two top scorers this season for the Titans, and both are the only two players to average double-figure point totals. Williams leads the team with 16.3 ppg with a team-best 2.4 apg average. Harris isn't a distant second with 13.6 ppg, and is first on the squad with 1.3 spg. Steve McClellan leads Fullerton this season with 5.9 rpg.
Cal State Northridge shot a dismal 28.1 percent from the floor in the first half of Thursday night's overtime loss. UC Davis took a 49-32 advantage into the locker room at the half, but the Matadors came roaring back in the second to tie the game and send it to overtime, where they lost 9-5. Stephan Hicks scored 23 points to lead Northridge, adding seven rebounds to his stat line. Stephen Maxwell added 21 points and five rebounds, and Josh Greene chipped in 19 points.
Maxwell, Hicks and Greene have been three dominant forces for the Matadors this season, each as members of the top three in team scoring. Maxwell tops the squad with 17.2 ppg on 57.7 percent shooting from the floor. He also leads the team in rebounding at 8.7 rpg. Hicks is second in scoring (16.5 ppg) and second in rebounding (7.2 rpg) for the Matadors. Greene nets 15.2 ppg for a Northridge squad scoring 74.5 ppg this season.
Both Fullerton and Northridge occupy the bottom spots in the Big West Conference this season, each three and a half games back of the lead. At home, the Matadors should be able to get some momentum going with its top scorers active and ready to go.
