Police: Student collapses, dies on NC Central campus in Durham

From staff reportsFebruary 10, 2014

— Police were investigating the death of a 20-year-old man who collapsed along Lawson Street on the campus of N.C. Central University on Monday evening.

Police said the death appeared to be the result of natural causes. They blocked off Lawson Street, which runs between Fayetteville Street and South Alston Avenue on the university’s north side.

The man was identified as DeVonté Squire by his aunt, Danitra Squire. She was unsure on Monday night how he had died.

DeVonté Squire was a student enrolled in NCCU’s theater program, his aunt said. Squire, of Weldon, was walking down the sidewalk when he collapsed, she said.

School officials offered their condolences through a written release on Monday night, announcing that the university would make counselors available for bereaved students.

A vigil will honor Squire in the near future, but hasn’t yet been scheduled, the university said.
