Terry Murphy: Peaceful police

February 14, 2014

The most notable performance in the Feb. 8 march was by the Raleigh Police Department. I commend the officers on their noticeably low profile – just as it should be for a peaceful demonstration. I’m sure they had contingencies and strategically placed reserves, but their involvement as traffic controllers and keepers of the peace was refreshingly correct.

Thanks for presenting Raleigh as a civilized society, in direct contrast to our quite uncivilized General Assembly. I walked the whole route, and except for three mounted officers, I don’t think I counted a dozen uniforms. I know there were more non-uniformed, but they remained unobtrusive as well.

Capitol police and Chapel Hill police should take note. They don’t need to outnumber the participants or send in storm troopers to maintain order.
