Jim Bass: A raise for all teachers

February 15, 2014

Regarding the Feb. 11 news article “Plan touts teacher pay raise”: It simply makes no sense to me to carve out the least experienced teachers for a $5,000 raise while providing nothing for teachers who have invested many more years of their lives to education.

Was a spectrum of educational leaders consulted with regard to such a proposal? I have my doubts.

A much more equitable distribution would give all teachers a $2,500 raise, which would represent an 8.3 percent raise for a teacher making $30,000 and a 4.2 percent raise for a teacher making $60,000.
