Mrs. John Matthews Wooten

Elizabeth Johnson Darden and John Matthews Wooten of Raleigh were married at Christ Church in Raleigh on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at six o’clock. The Reverend James Patrick Adams officiated. Following the ceremony, the bride’s parents hosted a reception at the Carolina Country Club.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Francis Darden II of Raleigh. She is the granddaughter of Mr. William McKenzie Ragland of Raleigh and the late Mrs. Ragland and the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Davis Darden, Jr. of Morehead City.

The groom is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Lamont Wooten of Greenville. He is the grandson of Dr. Harriet Husted Wooten and the late Dr. John Lemuel Wooten of Greenville and Mrs. David Lucius Matthews and the late Mr. Matthews of Santee, South Carolina.

The bride was given in marriage by her parents. Celeste Allen Chapman of Raleigh was the matron of honor and Kristen Baynes Herrington of New York, New York, was the maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Virginia Lamont Wooten of Los Angeles, California, and Katherine Husted Wooten of Washington, D.C., sisters of the groom. Other bridesmaids were Elise Lockett Dorsett of Raleigh, Meredith Christine Robbins and Laura Mariah Stephenson of Durham and Helen Erica Mou of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Catherine Elizabeth Ragland of Atlanta, cousin of the bride, was a junior bridesmaid and Claire Field King of Washington, D.C., cousin of the groom, was the flower girl.

William Carlton Midyette III of Raleigh served as best man. Thomas Francis Darden III of New Orleans, Louisiana, and James Ragland Darden of Boulder, Colorado, brothers of the bride, were groomsmen. Other groomsmen were Benjamin Harris Goldsmith of Atlanta, James Robert Sneeden and Lindsay Garth Gray, Jr. of Wilmington, Jon David Wilhelmsen of Brooklyn, New York, and Zachary Entis Lagood of San Francisco, California. William McKenzie Ragland III of Atlanta, cousin of the bride, was a junior groomsman and Robert Paine Ragland of Atlanta, cousin of the bride, was the ring bearer.

Scripture readers were Nathaniel Ragland Park, cousin of the bride, and Abigal Arbes Murnick of Raleigh. Greeters were Maria Milan Jovanovic of Arlington, Virginia, and Valerie Brock Worth of Raleigh. Ushers were Beau Whitehurst Corey of Raleigh and James Clayton Douglas and David Robert Wylie of Chapel Hill. Music was provided by David W. Jernigan, organist.

The bride was graduated from Groton School in Groton, Massachusetts, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She also received her Master’s degree in City and Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In 2007, she was presented by the Terpsichorean Club at the North Carolina Debutante Ball. She works for Power Generation Services, Inc. in Raleigh.

The groom was graduated from J. H. Rose High School in Greenville and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He is a paramedic with Orange County, an emergency medical services instructor at Durham Technical Community College and will be attending medical school in the fall.

After a honeymoon trip to Argentina and Patagonia, John and Elizabeth will spend several months in the Dominican Republic doing volunteer work before returning to the states.
