Michael Cotter: Not a majority view on same-sex marriage ban

February 17, 2014

Regarding the Feb. 7 letter “No N.C. nuptials”: I congratulate Lewis Dancy and his husband on their marriage. I hope they can take some solace in the fact that it was not 61 percent of his fellow Tar Heels who voted to ban same-sex marriage, but 61 percent of the paltry 10 or 12 percent of eligible voters who bothered to vote on the referendum during a primary election. The crime here is that a very small minority of our residents can amend the state constitution. That in itself ought to be unconstitutional.
