Scholar-athlete: Josh Lowery of Wakefield

February 17, 2014

Wakefield, 6-foot-1 Senior

Academics: 4.125 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale with extra credit for advanced courses.

Athletics: Starter at wide receiver in football and at forward in basketball.

Coach says: “Josh is an extremely hard worker both on and off the court. He is a team player who gives you everything he has on the court, in the community and in the classroom.” – basketball coach Dexter Cooley

“Josh may not be the most talented player on the field, but through his hard work and determination he is able to make himself compete with players who may have a better skill set than him.” – football coach Rod Sink

Most impactful book: “ ‘The Blind Side’ (by Michael Lewis) gave me a great appreciation for all that I have. The player in the book took full advantage of every opportunity. He came from a horrible background and achieved. I have a lot more and need to make sure I use what I have.”

Music: “I always listen to music before games to calm down some.”

I was fascinated to learn: “I was really amazed to learn how to solve basic equations in math. You always get a definite answer. I remember being fascinated with how that worked.”

I lead by: “Setting an example. It really doesn’t matter what you say, leading comes down to what you do. A great leader makes all those people around him better.”

Most important U.S. document: “The U.S. Constitution is what holds us together. It is the foundation for our country.”

The difference in thinking in football and basketball is: “That in basketball, one person can make a big difference. One guy can score a lot. But in football, you have to have a lot more people doing their job. One guy, by himself, can do very little on a football field. Working together, a team can accomplish a lot.”
