Barbara M. Parramore: True gifts

February 18, 2014

With respect to school board policy in Wake County, the best gift to teachers is a student who has had breakfast, brings completed homework and arrives ready to learn, every day. Even better would have been home discussions of topics being studied.

Gifts of real value are those of time by both students and parents. Time to design and make a card of thanks for the teacher. Time to take over hall, lunch or bus duty once a week or to supervise afterschool study hall.

Somehow, those gift cards or cash arriving at holidays or end of the school year are too much like tips to underrated and underpaid workers, not professionals. Do parents take gift cards to the pediatrician or dentist? They also contribute to the growth and well-being of children and youth.

The best gift of all to teachers are the voters who bring in elected leaders who work to reverse the longtime trend of undervaluing teachers when the North Carolina budget is being developed.
