Jack R. Stone: School board’s wrong focus

February 18, 2014

I read the Feb. 17 news article wherein the Wake County Board of Education is reviewing its “gift limit” policy. This is the United States of America. If a parent wants to give to a teacher for a job well done, the board shouldn’t care less.

The board needs to focus on improving the education of our academically gifted students so that SAT scores rise significantly, addressing why too many third-graders are not reading well, coaching and encouraging teachers to teach ore effectively, holding principals and other administrators to a high level of accountability, ensuring the students and staff are in a safe and secure environment where learning is maximized and increasing to a high level the proficiency of students who graduate.
