Jan Withers: Helping hearing impaired

February 18, 2014

On Feb. 12, you kindly published my Point of View piece on the responsibility of media to ensure North Carolina’s one million deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind people have access to information presented at Gov. Pat McCrory’s news conferences during times of emergency. McCrory’s series of news conferences in response to the recent winter storm gave several media outlets a golden opportunity to make sure this happened.

I am so pleased to note that several stations have done an outstanding job of keeping the sign-language interpreter visible on the TV screen and captions running throughout entire news conferences. This truly is making a difference for so many North Carolinians. Keep up the good work!
