David Fass: Fox in hen house

February 19, 2014

A criminal probe of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources has been launched by the U.S. Justice Department for its regulation, or lack thereof, of Duke Energy (“Feds launch criminal probe after coal ash spill,” Feb. 16 news story).

This is the same organization that has repeatedly made decisions and passed regulations in favor of clearing the way for fast-tracking “fracking” at the expense of long-term assurance of safety to our water and air. This is not aligned with the first sentence of its mission statement: “It is recognized that the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ primary mission is to protect North Carolina’s environment and natural resources.”

Enabling the current leadership of DENR to determine what is safe is the same as letting the fox determine the best fencing to keep foxes out of the hen house.
