Saltwater

Oregon Inlet

Despite rough waters, fishermen have been catching the occasional blackfin with ballyhoo bait. Contact: Oregon Inlet Fishing Center 252-441-6301, www.oregon-inlet.com.

Buxton/Hatteras

Puppy drum have been biting between the south side of the point and Ramp 49. Fresh shrimp and gulps with lead heads have been the bait of choice. Contact: Red Drum Tackle 252-995-5414, www.hatteras-island.com; offshore news, Oden’s Dock 252-986-2555, www.odensdock.com; or www.hatterasharbor.com.

Ocracoke/Portsmouth

Cape Lookout/Bogue Inlet

Topsail Island

Red drum and speckled trout are being caught in the creek and the mouths of the canals. Contact: East Coast Discount Tackle 910-328-1887, www.eastcoastsports.com.

Wilmington/ Wrightsville Beach

Fishing has been inconsistent, but red drum and black drum are biting inshore, and sea bass, blackfin and the occasional dolphin have been spotted 25-30 miles offshore. Contact: Tex’s Tackle 910-791-1763, www.texstackle.com.

Southport/Sunset Beach

Freshwater

Falls Lake

Cold water has put a damper on fishing, but some crappie are being caught, and there has been scattered largemouth bass. Water level: normal 251.5, Wednesday 254.40, full pool 264.8. Contact: Outhouse Tackle 919-217-0085; www.wmi.org.

Jordan Lake

Crappie are getting hooked at depths of 20 feet. Minnows have been a popular choice for bait. Water level: normal 216, Wednesday 218.33, full pool 240. Contact: Wilsonville General Store 919-362-7101; Crosswinds Marina 919-362-5391.

Kerr Lake

Crappie are being caught at depths of 5-15 feet with spider jigs. Water level: normal 300, Wednesday 299.29, full pool 320. Contact: Bobcat’s Bait & Tackle 434-374-8381; www.kerrlake.com.

Lake Wheeler

Crappie are getting hooked at depths of 20 feet. Minnows have been a popular choice for bait. Contact: Wilsonville General Store 919-362-7101.

Shearon Harris Lake

Some bass is being caught in shallow and deep water with jerk bait. Crappie are being frequently hooked in deep water. Contact: The Tackle Box 919-557-8255; www.wmi.org.
